Hi there! I’m Kari Joys. I’ve been a psychotherapist in Spokane, Washington for the past 30 years. I’d love to tell you about a new book I’m writing! It’s called Happy Healing, How to Experience Natural, Light-Hearted Recovery from Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Abuse Issues.
Happy Healing offers a healthy, natural alternative to the multi-billion dollar industry of anti-depressant medication. It’s a light-hearted healing opportunity for the millions of people who are stuck, anxious, depressed and miserable, because they don’t know what to do to feel better.
All of our families were dysfunctional to some degree or another; as a result everyone has emotional issues at some point in their life. If you are not experiencing some stress, anxiety or depression in your life right now, you probably know someone who is. That’s partly because psychology is still a new science. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychology, only lived and worked a hundred years ago.
It’s only in the past 20 to 30 years that our culture has begun to deal openly with emotional issues. Before that no one talked about issues like addictions, domestic violence, verbal, physical and sexual abuse. No one admitted to being anxious or depressed, because we were afraid it would mean we were mentally ill. As a result, our parents didn’t grow up knowing how to deal with their emotions and most of us never learned how to be healthy and happy or how to have healthy relationships and families.
We’ve been programmed through TV commercials in the US to believe that if we have emotional issues we are chemically imbalanced. How many of you believe today that if someone has overwhelming stress, anxiety, depression, or abuse issues that he or she is chemically imbalanced?
For many years, we've been told that ‘medical research studies’ proved the chemical imbalance theory, yet recently we’ve discovered that the theory actually has no basis in fact. The chemical imbalance theory was actually created by the drug companies to sell their medications to people who are terrified of facing their emotional issues.
Antidepressants are now a multi-billion dollar industry! Newsweek magazine recently reported that the sale of antidepressants brought in $9.6 billion in 2008, just in the United States alone. Newsweek also said that the number of Americans taking antidepressant medication has doubled in the last decade, from 13 million in 1996 to 27 million in 2005. Obviously, the fancy TV commercials we see everyday are working very well. How sad, however, that no one is educating people on the long-term side effects of antidepressants or on healthy alternatives to healing.
So let me tell you about emotional healing! Emotional healing is a natural alternative to taking antidepressants; it’s a natural healing process that anyone can learn. It involves learning to identify, express and release your feelings, so that you naturally come back to feeling love and peace inside. It usually begins with getting in touch with tears or anger that you’ve been holding back and often it ends with laughing and having fun.
What I call ‘Happy Healing’ is simply doing your emotional healing consistently over time with the intention to regain your true, authentic self. ‘Happy Healing’ doesn’t mean it will all be easy; it just means that you really can accomplish it, you can definitely laugh and have fun along the way, and when your life starts to improve, you’ll be very happy that you did it!
What I want you to know today is that there’s a natural payoff for doing consistent emotional healing; I call it ‘light-heartedness.’ Light-heartedness is a delightful state of being where you feel love, joy, peace and laughter as the norm in your everyday life. It’s coming back to your true, authentic self and experiencing the natural joy of being alive.
Emotional healing actually has many wonderful long-term benefits and no negative side-effects! The long-term benefits include better self-esteem, self-confidence, self-empowerment, healthier relationships, more creativity and success in life, better physical and emotional health, and a spontaneous sense of humor, among many other things.
Of course, being a healthy, happy person doesn’t mean you don’t have challenges; everyone has challenges in life. It just means that, no matter what happens, you’ve learned the 'Happy Healing Skills' for bringing yourself back to feeling love, joy, peace and laughter.
